Excerpt:
"1798, Norway

It had been two hundred years since the battle of Twin Peaks was decided and the warriors of the Order of the White Rose fought a long and grueling battle, losing over half their fighters against the Army of the Lord of Shadows.

The reason for the losses of these brave heroes was due to the evil dictator known as the Lord of Shadows. With his army, he descended upon the Scandinavian countryside to destroy all who stood in his way. Pillaging and selling the vanquished into slavery, he showed no mercy to his victims. He was defeated, however, not by the army, but by one man. That man was the leader of the Order of the White Rose, Master Eirik. He was a monk who had studied the ways of the warrior and mastered Aikido and Stav fighting. He fought the Lord of Shadows near the evil one’s temple.  He was able to seal the Lord of Shadows using the forbidden technique of the Soul Seal, banishing him into an object.

That was Master Eirik’s last battle because he gave his life to seal the evil one. The Lord of Shadows had been imprisoned for two centuries. This left five keys with the five Masters of the White Rose. The Lord of Shadows became imprisoned inside a statue of a Norse god. His power was dispersed among the five keys, and only if those five keys were brought together within the temple would he regain his power. The Guardians were there to make sure that did not happen. To further protect the keys, the Guardians eventually spread out among the world. For generations, the keys had been passed down from master to student."

BOOK SPOTLIGHT & REVIEW: Identity Theft by Laura Lee

Identity Theft
By Laura Lee
Publisher: Elsewhere Press
Genre: Fiction

Book Description

When the rock star she idolized responded to her e-mail, Candi was thrilled. When he started to flirt with her, she thought all her dreams could come true. The fantasy takes over her entire life, but none of it is true. The man of her dreams is not a rock star at all, but a bored office worker whose internet game quickly spins out of control.

Laura Lee’s second novel, Identity Theft, is now available. It is a humorous, thought-provoking examination of the state of the self in the 21st Century full of surprising plot twists.

It explores celebrity, online relationships, the loss of professional identity that comes with insecure employment and how inner reality is often at odds with outer image.

My Review

This is a stunning book for today’s America. A sad, poignant, and complex commentary on loneliness, misinformation, stilted justice, idol worship and the nearly existential nothingness of our grand (& failed) social experiment. The crux of this story centers on a disenfranchised and painfully alone Candi Tavris, recently determined to be obsolete in her workplace, and the aging rock star Blast, who is still hanging on to the bottom rungs of a flailing career. They are brought crashingly together by the rock stars publicity mechanism, through social media and anonymous internet encounters, into a brief physical tryst based on lies. All turned more foul by media exploitation and justice misinterpreted, and miscarried. Perfectly executed with deep character development, razor sharp wit, plot twists deeply woven into a tapestry of literary brilliance. I can’t say enough great things about this book. It’s a for-sure keeper and re-reader. I loved it. Five stars.

Author Bio

Laura Lee is the author of 14 books. She is best known for her non-fiction with such publishers as Reader's Digest, Harper Collins, Running Press and Broadway Books. Her first novel Angel was published in 2011, released in an audio edition last year and will be published in a second edition later this year. She has also written two collections of poetry, and a children’s book (A Child’s Introduction to Ballet). She brings to her writing a unique background as a radio announcer, improvisational comic and one-time professional mime and she divides her time between writing and organizing national ballet master class tours. The San Francisco Chronicle said of her work, “Lee’s dry, humorous tone makes her a charming companion… She has a penchant for wordplay that is irresistible.”
