BOOK SPOTLIGHT & REVIEW: A Million Thoughts: Learn All About Meditation from the Himalayan Mystic By Om Swami

A Million Thoughts: Learn All About Meditation from the Himalayan Mystic
By Om Swami
Genre: Spirituality, Meditation, Health

Each one of us is a master of infinite possibilities at a universal scale. Through meditation we experience our own magnificence, our true potential.

Drawing on his experience of thousands of hours of earnest and strenuous meditation, renowned sage Om Swami pens a guide to help channelize unruly, futile thoughts and turn them into productive energy.

A Million Thoughts shows how to meditate correctly, how to practice various styles of meditation and how to become proficient in the many yogic practices that will lead to the final stage of samadhi — the ultimate spiritual self-fulfillment.

Brimming with firsthand experiences and references from ancient and classical texts, this brilliant book is most suited for the modern reader who wishes to master the art of meditation.

My Review:

I can't speak for the rest of America, but I can certainly speak for myself in saying that I find myself quite often lost in a mire of conflicting feelings. Lost in the confusion of technology, lust for material possessions and a million other superficial worries and concerns. A general feeling of vague and hard-to-define dissatisfaction with the trappings of modern life and the meaning of my 'true' inner self, and where I am heading or what I really should be doing. In my search for just the most basic peace and contentment, I at many times become sidetracked by the mundane and absurd minutiae of our 'information age'. At a time that I needed it most, I discovered (through my work on the internet) Om Swami's stunning book A Million Thoughts: Learn All About Meditation from the Himalayan Mystic.

I have been on a quest to reconcile my 'true self' with my existence on this physical plane and found some relief and much insight in how to achieve a real peace and serenity while continuing to walk in this body. Through a series of teachings and story-telling, Om Swami discusses at length the strength of meditation, and the relief and inner calm that can be achieved by a quiet focus on my own inner consciousness. Focusing on finding harmony and being in rhythm with the subtle songs of our natural world and universe. This is a book that I will (and you can, too!) return to over and over as a guide to peace and love. Not just for myself, but on towards all things living. I am so happy to have discovered this great book at just the perfect time in my life to really be able to embrace it. But isn't that how things are supposed to work when we attempt to be in harmony with all that is around us? Thank you, Om Swami. For caring enough. My highest accolades are not sufficient.

EXCERPT

Kate walked faster, but Colleen stopped. “There’s a guy back there waving at you. Kinda nice looking. Now he’s coming our way.” Colleen smiled as though inviting him to come closer.
Don’t encourage him,” Kate said.
Too late. Here he is.” Colleen made a sweeping motion as though she were a hostess on a game show introducing today’s prizes.
Oh God, his eyes are browner than I remember.
Kate, I’m glad I caught you,” Eric said. “Sorry I missed you on the phone. I got back into town early.”
I see that,” Kate muttered, her icy tone coating each word. Not going through this drama again. Crazy guy. Multiple girlfriends. Bad endings.
I’m Eric Wiley,” he said, offering his hand for Colleen to shake before returning his attention to Kate.
So maybe we can set up that coffee date. There’s a great little place a couple of doors down.”
I know. Colleen and I just had coffee there.”
And scones,” Colleen chimed in, handing Kate her bag of leftovers. “I’ve got to get going. I have class in thirty minutes.”
Teacher or student?” Eric asked.
Yoga instructor.”
Nice. Maybe I can take your class sometime. It’s not that sweaty yoga, is it?”
No, it’s more of a flow class. Kate can tell you all about it.” Colleen tapped Kate on the shoulder. “I’ll see you later,” she said before scurrying toward the yoga studio.
I like your friend,” Eric said gesturing to Colleen’s back.
She’s pretty terrific. We met in her class. Used to be a cop.” Kate wanted to run away, but her feet grounded into the earth as though an alien force rooted them in place. All the small talk didn’t comfort her. Minutes before this guy was kissing another woman, and now he was flirting with her. Was there no end to his nerve?
Now that’s really switching career paths,” Eric said. “I consider doing that sometimes.”
And leave the family business for what? I don’t see that happening.” You’re such a privileged mama’s boy, Kate wanted to say, but didn’t. Truth was during their earlier interactions, Eric didn’t strike her as someone who life had been easy on. It was obvious his parents leaned on his judgment. Eric presented himself as a self-made man, working for what success came his way. Still, he was hiding something she couldn’t quite put her finger on.
Granted with business-owner parents, his path may have been smoother than many. Even if your folks set you up, you’re the one who has to walk that path. Kate knew lots of privileged folks who took the benefits they were born into and managed to drink, gamble or in some other way squander their advantage, as though opportunity was an all-you-can-eat buffet. Made a bad choice, no problem. Just get a clean plate and try again. The sports pages and movie magazines were filled with celebrity examples. A couple of Kate’s sorority sisters were still trying to find themselves. That’s what they claimed at the last reunion.
You’d be surprised. I can tell you more about my future plans over a hot mocha.”
Kate readjusted her purse strap and leaned away. “Thanks for the invite, but I need to get to work. We’re already brainstorming the next complex. Proposal is due in two weeks.”
Yeah, I know. We talked about your innovative ideas. I thought they were great. You’re great.” Eric licked his lips and stepped closer. “Seems to me like we connected, at least a little bit, but if you’re not interested, just say so. You don’t have to go through not answering my calls and giving me the brush off. Just be honest. It will save us both a lot of time.”
Kate shoved her paper pastry bag in her coat pocket and crossed her arms. “Honesty? Is that the most important value to you, because I believe in always telling the truth. I always tell the truth.”
And you’re suggesting I don't?” Eric’s nostrils flared with anger, causing Kate to step back. “We are standing in the street arguing about I don’t know what. Do you want to have a cup of coffee with me or not? It’s just that simple.”
Not until you answer a question first.” Kate straightened to her full five-foot-six height. “Who were you kissing a moment ago?”
Kissing? What are you talking about?”
Near the cab. The woman who kissed you. Who is she? You’re an only child, so I know that wasn’t your sister. A cousin, maybe?” Kate huffed.
Eric’s eyes widened.
Is this how he stalls for time, cooking up a lie, Kate thought. This should be really good. She waited, even tapped the toe of her boot a time or two. “Well?”
Like I said on my call, business ended early. I grabbed a cab with a coworker. End of story.”
Not quite. Here comes your coworker, and she looks ticked.”

GUEST POST: Master of Alaska By Roger Seiler

Master of Alaska
By Roger Seiler
Genre: Historical Fiction, Historical Romance

The year 2017 is the Sesquicentennial (150th year anniversary) of the U.S. purchase of Alaska from Russia. Today Russia and the U.S. often seem to be at each other's throats, but in the 1860s the two countries were the best of buddies. Tsar Alexander II had supported the Union in the U.S. Civil War, making other European countries think twice before recognizing the Confederacy – none did. When Secretary of State William Seward and the Russian Ambassador to the U.S. negotiated the treaty for the sale of Alaska to the U.S. in March of 1867, the treaty stipulated that Alaska would change hands in October of that year.

After the ambassador greased enough Senate palms to ensure approval, within a few days the treaty had the 2/3 consent of the Senate. It was assumed that the U.S. House of Representatives, who had to approve the expenditure for the sale, would give its okay well before the property transfer in October. But guess what? The House went out of session before taking up the matter of the purchase and wouldn't come back to work until December – two months AFTER Alaska was scheduled to be handed over to the U.S. When October 1867 rolled around, the Russians kept their side of the bargain and gave the keys to their Alaskan ice box to the Yanks.

What's waiting a couple of months for payment among friends? However, when the House reconvened in December, they had no interest in Alaska. All they wanted was President Andrew Johnson's hide. They stayed completely focused on the impeachment of Johnson until the summer of 1868 when the Senate let Johnson off the hook, falling one vote shy of giving him the boot.

So, the exhausted House was about to adjourn again, when somebody yelled, “Wait a minute! We need to take care of Tsar Alex, our dear friend who kept Europe from meddling in our recent family spat. We mustn't keep Alex waiting for his money!”

Now can you imagine today, you buy a house, move in and then finally get around to paying for it eight months later? Tsar Alexander II was a real friend, a trusting friend. He reasoned, any nation that was started by a man who told the truth about a chopped-down cherry tree could be trusted to pay its debts. Now why can't we and the Russians get along like that today?

Importantly, the Alaska purchase never would have happened were it not for the first Russian governor of Alaska, Aleksandr Baranov. Baranov stopped the British from taking over Alaska and adding it to Canada in the early 1800s. He's a “colorful guy” that I write about in my new historical novel, Master of Alaska – the rip-roaring saga of Baranov's great adventure and his amazing love story in the wilds of Alaska back when the men and women of the Last Frontier were made of true grit.

The detail and research that author Roger Seiler used – from biographies to actual letters and reports by the Governor Baranov himself - creates a riveting story.

Master of Alaska - a compelling Historical Fiction about the first governor of Alaska sent to the colony by Russia in 1790 – George Washington was President at the time. Master of Alaska starts in October 1790 when Aleksandr Baranov left his family in Russia and sails across the North Pacific to Kodiak to become the chief manager for Tsarina Catherine the Great’s colony in the far Northwest of North America. Baranov is shipwrecked, saved and adopted by the Aleut natives. Later he is forced to marry Anooka the daughter of the tribal chief, despite still having a wife back in Russia to save his men from starvation. Only slated to serve five years, Baranov spends the next 28 years in Alaska, surviving natural disasters, a massacre of his people at Sitka, meddling competing Russian authorities, a British attempt to undermine his colony and an assassination attempt. Interestingly, Baranov’s native wife and teenage daughter play an intricate role and contribute much to his success and survival in Alaska. Baranov built an empire and sought peace with the warring Tlingit, and thanks largely to his efforts Alaska is part of the U.S. toda
y.

BOOK SPOTLIGHT & REVIEW: Sparks: Welcome to the Madhouse By Dan Cummings

Sparks: Welcome to the Madhouse
By Dan Cummings
Genre: Supernatural/Action & Adventure

Dave Reynolds has grown jaded with his life, locked in a dead end janitorial job at the Ravenswood Institute for Mental Health, he quietly yearns for some excitement to stir up his mundane existence.

That is until he learns that far below the hospital's grounds lies the Madhouse, the regional headquarters of the Frontline Unified Battalion of Arcane Resistance (FUBAR), a clandestine government agency tasked with combating supernatural evil. If that wasn't enough of a surprise, he also learns that he is a Spark, an individual with latent gifts, carrying the residual energy of a nigh extinct race of universal protectors.

Drafted into service, he is accidentally afflicted with a curse, casting the sensible, rational aspects of his personality into a subconscious prison, unleashing a clownish psychotic who is as deadly as he is irritating.

A wild card personified, Dave must now lead Whiskey Team, a motley crew of fellow Sparks and freaks including a punk rock witch, a werewolf, a medium and his ghostly best friend, and a female Japanese ninja, against the Alliance of Nyx, an ancient demonic organisation with designs on global conquest.

Now, if Dave's reckless antics don't get his team killed, they may just stand a chance in this war.

My Review:

Maybe someone should have warned Dave Reynolds to be careful what he wished for because when he least expected it, his world turned upside down. A seemingly bored, but unknowingly, extraordinary fellow, Dave longed for more than mopping floors. Soon enough, the supernatural underworld lures him in, and he becomes a badass fighting machine. A gnarly group of characters and an action-packed plot. I confidently give Sparks 4 stars.

About the Author

Dan Cummings is a self-published author from Liverpool, England. He is also a lowly nerd with a short attention span and shorter fuse (depending on poor sleep), but when he is able to stop ranting with his own internal monologue and focus for a few minutes he enjoys putting the noise in his head onto paper. A lifetime fan of monsters, comic books, sarcasm and casual violence, it is inevitable that these constituents regularly crop up in his books. Heartbreaker is his first foray into horror, whilst Sparks: Welcome to the Madhouse, is the first installment of an on-going supernatural, action/adventure series.
